CCleaner installing Google Crapware silently.

cats palace2 7 years ago updated by Unchecky 7 years ago 7

I have just updated the CCleaner free edition to 5.23.5808 an it installed unwanted software, Google chrome and the Google BHO for Explorer. It did this silently and there are no options to decline the offer or nor is it mentioned in the software agreement that I could see. Unchecky didn't pick it up and I uninstalled the crapware manually. Something you might want to check. I've been using the CCleanrer for a while now and found it to be good honest software. If this is the case with the unwanted software issue then its a pity.... might have to try something else. Come to rely on Unchecky to pick this sort of thing up. It's a good solid, effective and unobtrusive little app. keep up the great work and Thank you.

Yes I thought it was odd too as I keep CCleaner up to date and this was the first time I came over this issue too. I usually download direct from the owners site but I can't recall if I downloaded from file hippo. I know it came with CCleaner because the install bar came up 3 times and it is usually only comes up the once. There was no indication it as installing Google products on the pop ups. It just said "installing software" (or something to that extent) I wasn't paying close attention as this is usually a safe site. I keep anti malaware /adware /virus active on this computer too. Not entirely sure how it got past the protection. Will Know for sure on the next CCleaner update!...Cheers. Mick

Further to my first post I updated my daughters machine with the same version CCleaner update I put on this machine. I used Filehippo as the download site and did a save to the desktop. I installed the new version onto her machine and it did a clean install with a single install window and then it closed. The programme activated and there were no extra installs . I don't have Unchecky installed on her machine. Not sure what has happened but I know for certain I updated my machine and the Google crapware was installed at the same time as the CCleaner update. I don't know of anyone having a similar experience Thanks for the help and support, Cheers Mick :P

Actually, I've had Unchecky uncheck boxes on CCleaner from v5.15 to v5.19. However, today when I downloaded from FileHippo and ran the installer for v5.24.5841, it had the box checked for Google Toolbar. I was surprised, because I'm so used to seeing the boxes unchecked. I can certainly uncheck it manually, but wanted to add my plea to update it, as I think Unchecky is an awesome program and I enjoy seeing the boxes already unchecked.

So CCleaner did have a box to check to not Install the Google Toolbar, and had separate links for T&C and PP, but <sarcasm>I'm outraged that I had to move my mouse that terrible few inches to uncheck the box!</sarcasm> Perhaps CCleaner heard from actually outraged clients and put the option to not install back on in v5.24.

Piriform's other installers have crapware checkboxes too. I just updated Speccy and it was about to install Ccleaner for me.
